What made you come to Hungary?
I had a good half-Hungarian half-Portuguese friend back in Lisbon and he brain-washed me into coming. I was at a time in my life when I didn’t really know what I wanted to do or where I was going and so I applied to be a student in Budapest at the Central European University. My interview was terrible, I just kept saying “I don’t know” but I think they gave me the place on enthusiasm alone.
And then to the UN?
Sadly not straight there. I worked for IBM for a while, which was fine but not really in my area of interest. Not long ago I found out that the United Nations were opening up a headquarters here and so I sent an application and luckily I got in. It really is a unique place to work, because although you get international business environments, like at IBM, it’s nothing in comparison with the diversity at the UN.
What Does Your Job Consist Of?
Basically administration. Although even this in itself is interesting because of the sheer size of the organization. There are so many rules, and nearly as many exceptions. Of course it sounds exciting to say “I work for the UN” and to give the impression that I’m brokering peace deals between North and South Korea or something like this, but in truth I’m the person who is sorting out the travel arrangements for the people who do the exciting stuff. But I’m young, at the start of my career and I am meeting really interesting people and working for a great organization.
Sounds like you’ve been in international environments, have you learnt Hungarian?
I feel embarrassed to say no. Being a foreigner in Lisbon, there is no way you could survive for two years without speaking the language. To be honest, here I’ve been meeting too many interesting people from all over the world to put the time in to study Hungarian. Both when I was studying and now, I have the choice of going for a beer with guys from Mongolia, Mozambique or Manchester or going home to study and I didn’t want to pass up such opportunities.
What do you miss from home?
Fish. Seafood. Nothing else.
What’s the worst thing about living in Budapest?
Basically there is just too much stuff going on in any one day for me to do. New exhibitions opening, open air classical music performances, festivals… all these things mean that there is not enough time for me to do all of the things which I would like. It was worse before when I didn’t finish work until 10 p.m. Now I’m making up for the fact that I have my evenings back again by gorging myself on Budapest’s cultural offerings.
How long do you plan to stay?
Only God knows. I have signed a three-year contract with the UN and I’m very happy there for the time being. My girlfriend has also decided to move here soon and study. These two things have prompted me to finally get a place of my own after years of living in shared flats so I feel like I’m growing up and settling down a bit. I’m happy to be doing this in Budapest because it’s really a great city.
